Il Batistero

The Baptistery is a peculiar octagonal construction from the early XIth century built over the ruins of a roman construction. The outside is formed by a double row of pillars crowned with an octagonal dome and decorated in green and white marble from Prato. Particularly outstanding are its three doors from Andrea di Pontedera (also called Pisano) and Lorenzo Ghiberti. The East door, from Ghiberti was defined by Michelangelo as "The gate of Paradise".
