Chianti and Florence, Italy

The territory
Chianti, the area in which Chianti Classico wine has been produced for centuries, is that part of Tuscany that is bordered to the north by the suburbs of Florence, to the east by the Chianti Mountains, to the south by the city of Siena and to the west by the valleys of the Pesa and Elsa rivers.

Art
Very little remains in Chianti of the centuries that go from the Etruscan and Roman periods up to the Middle Ages, with the exception of the Etruscan tomb from the Archaic Age (VII b.c.)in Castellina in Chianti and a few remains of settlements along the main road that crosses the region.

The food
Bread for a day, wine for a year: This ancient proverb marvellously encapsulates the cuisine of Sienese Chianti.

The wine
Land of great wines, thanks to the monks who cleared woodland to plant vineyards around the abbeys, and thanks to the peasants who perpetuated the cultivation thereof.

The oil
Chianti, land of great wines and artistic beauty, but also of an excellent and prestigious extra-virgin olive-oil.

History
The origin of the word “Chianti” is up for discussion. It can be attributed to the Etruscan term “clante” common name given to a person in that language, or to the Latin verb “clango”, sound the trumpets and play the horns, probably referring to the beginning of the hunt.
