Santa Maria Del Fiore: "Il Duomo"


The construction of this huge church dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore was started in 1296 by Arnolfo di cambio who directed the works until his death in 1302. In 1334 Giotto was nominated foreman of the works but he dedicated most of his time to the project of the near Bell Tower. In 1357 works were started again by Francesco Talenti and Lapo Ghini who modified some of Giotto's designs. In 1418 Brunelleschi, who won the competition for the best project, started building the Dome without any reinforcements. It was finished in 1434.
